Imperial Oil recently announced a long-term contract with Air Products (AP) to supply low-carbon hydrogen (H©ü) for Imperial’s proposed renewable diesel complex at its Strathcona refinery near Edmonton, Alberta. AP will provide pipeline supply from its H2 plant under construction in Edmonton.
Imperial will use AP’ low-carbon H2 to produce renewable diesel at Strathcona. Third-party studies have shown renewable diesel can provide life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions reductions of approximately 40 to 80 percent as compared to petroleum-based diesel.
AP is increasing overall investment in its Edmonton H2 facility to CAD $1.6 billion to support the Imperial contract. AP will supply Strathcona with approximately 50 percent of the low-carbon hydrogen output from the 165 million scf per day hydrogen production complex.
